HERITAGE FUND GRANT DEADLINE – FEBRUARY 1st

The deadline to apply for a Heritage Fund grant is approaching fast. The Heritage Fund awards up to $5,000 to non-profit organizations and local jurisdictions for capital and non-capital historic preservation projects. The Fund is intended to serve the needs of tangible cultural resources in Maryland that may not be met through other funding programs.

Projects eligible for funding include acquisition and/or stabilization of endangered historic properties; bricks and mortar repairs and restoration; and education, research and planning efforts related to resource preservation.  Please see the Heritage Fund Guidelines and Procedures for a full listing of projects eligible for funding.

Our Selection Committee will meet in February to review applications for funding.  Projects are evaluated on a competitive basis according to their urgency for financial need; administrative capability of the application and the extent to which the project stimulates or promotes other preservation activities.  For a full listing of grant awards criteria click the link listed above for the Heritage Fund Guidelines and Procedures.

For further information please go to the funding section of Preservation Maryland’s website or contact me mbenaderet@preservationmaryland.org or 410-685-2886, x. 303.

How Important Are Year-end Gifts to Charities?

Has your mail just morphed from an avalanche of catalogs to solicitations from a mind-boggling

PM serves as a resource for the latest preservation techniques and regulations relating to their application.

PM serves as a resource for the latest preservation techniques and regulations relating to their application.

number of worthy causes competing for your year-end charitable dollar? There are more than 20,000 non-profit institutions in Maryland alone, and it seems that nowadays every one of them is asking you to invest in their mission before the calendar is turned to the new year. No one has a crystal ball to predict what plunging over the “fiscal cliff” will feel like, or even if it will happen. But it does seem reasonable to assume that for many people, in 2013 the tax burden will increase, and the deductibility of philanthropic gifts will not.

Preservation Maryland is no exception. Our annual fund solicitation is underway. Here’s a sample of what a contribution to Preservation Maryland’s annual fund will help do:

• ensure that our historic resources have a voice in Annapolis when laws and regulations are being considered that affect their futures,
• continue providing educational tools and information to volunteer and professional preservationists through workshops, conferences, and tours
• sustain our Endangered Maryland program which raises awareness for our most threatened heritage properties and invites solutions to the threats they face
• perpetuate one of the only funding sources for local preservation projects

To donate on line, click here. Or, call us at 410-685-2886 to provide your credit card information. Checks may be mailed to our headquarters at 24 West Saratoga Street, Baltimore MD 21201. We’ll put your deductible-guaranteed gift to good use. Thank you for your support and, remember, the clock is ticking.

Help Support Preservation Funding in Governor O’Malley’s Budget

The 430th Session of the Maryland General Assembly is just a couple months away. Here at Preservation Maryland we have been working with a coalition of statewide heritage interests and organizations to develop a preservation agenda to guide advocacy efforts. Earlier this week we sent out an Advocacy Alert detailing the budget goals the coalition has identified for the upcoming Session. Programs were are advocating for are the Sustainable Communities Tax Credit, the Maryland Historical Trust’s Non-Capital, Capital, and Museum Assistance grant programs, the African American Heritage Preservation Grant Program, Main Street Maryland, Maryland Heritage Areas, and the Maryland Humanities Council.

The first step is getting funding for these programs into the Governor’s budget. Your help is critical to make sure these programs are included.  You can check out the Advocacy Alert for full details on what you can do and see the funding levels we are requesting for each program as well. Below are the “cliff notes” version of how you can help.

1) Contact the Governor’s Office to register your support.  If you have received a grant or other assistance from the programs above, be sure to emphasize how important those programs are to the success of your project or organization. You do not need to weigh in on every item, but be sure to let the Governor know what program(s) are most important to you. Click here to access the form to e-mail the Governor
2) Copy
Secretary of Budget and Management, T. Eloise Foster on any communication to the Governor or write her directly.
3) Familiarize yourself with the issues through the links to the websites for the programs above. Use these to help craft your message to the Governor and Legislators.
4) Use the end of the year to communicate what you do and why it’s important to your legislators. If your organization is releasing an Annual Report or mailing a Holiday card, be sure to include your elected officials on the mailing list.
5) Take time to familiarize yourself with the Legislative and Budget process by visiting the
Maryland General Assembly Homepage. If the language of the legislative process makes your head spin, you can use this guide to “Legislative Lingo” to help get your bearings.
6) Make sure you know your representatives on a state and federal level by clicking
here.

We hope you will help us in this effort. In these tough times the budget is tight and every voice raised in support of these programs helps immensely. If you do help, please let us know or send a copy of your communication. Thank you for your support!

2011 Preservation and Revitalization Conference Held in Annapolis

A historic windows workshop was part of the two-day conference. Photo by Richard Lippenholz

May was Preservation Month and each year Preservation Maryland celebrates by holding the Annual Preservation and Revitalization Conference. This year’s event was also a celebration of the Maryland Historical Trust’s 50th anniversary and Preservation Maryland’s 80th anniversary. The Conference took place in Annapolis’ Historic Downtown on May 19 and 20. Over 500 participants participated in two days of educational sessions, tours, workshops, and other events.

We could not have presented the conference without the help of our partners and sponsors. This year, we owe a special thank-you to the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, who served as our major sponsor and provided help in the planning process. A complete list of our sponsors is available on the conference page of our website. Also up on that page are PDF versions of the final conference program, speaker biography, and attendee list.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Conference. I hope you had a wonderful time, learned something new, and made new contacts! If you have any questions about the Conference please contact me at 410-685-2886 ext. 302 or jfeldt@preservationmaryland.org.
